What the Edict of Worms was and its Effect.
On May 25, 1521, Emperor Charles V issued the Edict of Worms after Martin Luther vanished during his trip to Wittenberg. The Edict of Worms stated that Martin Luther was an outlaw and heretic. It also banned Martin Luther's literature.
The Cause and Result of the Peace of Augsburg.
At the Diet of Worms in 1521 Emperor Charles V outlawed Lutheranism but he was unable to stop the reform movement because of other problems he was dealing with. It wasn't until 1529 that Charles was able to work on the Lutheran issue. He said that Catholicism was to be brought back everywhere in Germany. A lot of German cities and princes protested. These were called the "Protesting estates" and that's where the name "Protestant" comes from. Charles saw that some sort of deal needed to be made. However, making a deal proved to be impossible so Charles ordered Lutherans to reunite with the Catholic Church by April 15, 1531. They resisted and formed a military alliance of Protestants, known as the Schmalkaldic League. In 1552, at the Peace of Passau, Charles accepted the existence of the church and promised to hold a "diet" to settle the argument. Peace was arranged between the Lutherans and Catholics on September 25, 1555. What the Peace if Augsburg did was divide Europe into the Roman Catholic Church and the new Lutheran (Protestant) Church and officially recognized the Lutheran Church and the right of people to worship as Protestants.
